Camden St, Newtown, NSW

 

A young couple asked us to help them upgrade a recently purchased single storey terrace house in Newtown.  When they purchased the property it had a very ramshackle rear section and even an outdoor toilet!  Working to a very tight budget the proposal included complete demolition of the rear parts of the building to create a new combined kitchen & living area and the addition of a new bedroom & ensuite on an upper level. An existing small bedroom / study was repurposed, converting it into a second bathroom serving the existing downstairs bedrooms.

 

The works were designed & documented in such a way that the construction could be staged, allowing the new kitchen & living area and downstairs bathroom (with the oh-so-important indoor toilet) to be built first, with the upper level works being put on hold for some time in the future.  The stage 1 works were completed in August 2015 and stage 2 was completed in October 2017.

 

The resulting house is a generous three bedroom, two bathroom terrace on a very narrow site with light, air & space and a great outlook to a leafy rear yard.  The details, fixtures & fittings, while inexpensive, possess an industrial / rustic feel and even include a number of items of furniture that were hand built by the client.
