FIVE DOCK RESIDENCE
New Jersey Road, Five Dock, NSW

A small three bedroom cottage was converted into a much larger & grander family home that is flooded with natural light and with a greater connection to the rear yard. The proposal was presented to council as an alterations & additions project to allow the existing zero-lot side wall to remain. Designed to fit within the building envelope specified in the planning controls, the resulting roof shape creates an interesting external form with the upper level being a mixture of attic space and second storey addition.
The main design elements of this house are a two-storey void linking upper & lower living spaces and north-facing clerestory windows along an upstairs gallery-style hallway. These two features allow northern light into the plan on an otherwise land-locked site with north to the side boundary.
Designed for a builder & their family to live in, the architect had limited input beyond the preparation of basic construction certificate drawings The client refined the design, the details and the interior finishes & fixtures themselves. But the finished product is an outstanding residence with great attention to detail, prestige finishes and it has more than done the architect’s design proud. Well done Laurie & Nicole!
